Is there any way to use DVD-R's like a CD-R?

I have a bunch of DVD-R's that a friend gave me and I want to know if I can format them or something like that, that will make them like a CD-R and work in a CD player. I have a DVD-RW/CD-RW/DVD-R/CD-R burner, so don't say anything like, "You can't burn DVDs in a CD drive".

You can't use them in a cd player but you can backup all your music and photos on them

The way DVD's and CD are made and are layered is different. Their size and capacity make them nontransferable.
