Is there really a separation of state and religion in the United States?

Just think of it: the federal government had done nothing to stop the religious discrimination in the state of Utah. Most presidents have had to admit some sort of faith in order to become a president, in fact it's like they have to be Christian. I believe in God but I believe He respects the free will of people. We all know that many Republicans consist of fanatical-ultra right conservative Christians who will always put religion and government together. I am not sure but most namings for direct government positions require to swear by the Bible. Then is the USA really a country that endorses freedom of religion? I've never seen a Buddhist monastery or a mosque that resembles those that can be seen in Arab countries.
