I'm writing a novel about two doctors who fall in love, I like the first paragraph but i'm not to sure on the rest any opinions/suggestions would be much appreciated x
For most people a first day at a new job is hard enough, but for Gabby Jones it was like the anticipation of what may happen was so overwhelmingly terrifying that she thought her heart was about to fly out of her chest, and the first time she’d see the operating room would be as a patient. With her hands shaking and her heart racing she opened the door to what may be the next few years of her life. She found herself in a room of people that looked just as scared as she did but unlike her they all hid it well, some were standing at the back against the wall looking impatient whilst others sat quietly for something to happen but they all had one thing in common, they all reeked of desperation. As university graduates, for the first time in their lives they had no idea what would happen next. No one knew who would be the first person to tell them what to do, no one knew who their mentor would be, no one knew.
“Look lively people”
A short old man with white hair was walking down the side of the room. He had glasses on his nose that looked like they belonged back in the 70’s and a stomach that hanged over his belt so much you doubted if he could see his feet, but he was still unmistakeably recognisable.
“My name is Mr. Wiley and I am your head of surgery and your boss”
His voice was low and deep, you could tell he had a lot of experience and wisdom in him and as her boss Gabby was not prepared to cross him.
“Today is the day you become doctors. Everyone in this room is equal, as from now whatever has happened in your past is forgotten; you start at square one. You are F1’s and you have no authority, no respect. Every life you save, every medical mystery you diagnose will earn you respect, but at the end of this year when you sit that exam it is not about the amount of respect you have earned it is about how much you have learnt. This job is tough, you need to have the ability to think on your feet, you need to be able to work long hours and stand for long periods of time. It’s emotionally and physically exhausting”
Another group of doctors were walking down the side of the room, some were easily recognisable because of their work but Gabby could tell that all of them were consultants. They all wore normal clothes; most of the women were in a long pencil skirt with a blouse tucked into it and the men either had a shirt and jumper on or a shirt and tie, but they all had stethoscopes around their necks.
“These people to the side of me are your mentors and all of them are great doctors and have a lot of respect in this hospital. They’re your teachers and if you mess up it’s on them and if you kill their patient they will make sure your punished. When I call your name you must go with your mentor: Dr Nathan Mohamed, Dr Neil Panning, Dr Kelly Wilkinson and Dr Lily-May Jenkins you will be with Dr Chambers; head of Neurology –”
The list went on, until five people were left; Gabby two other women and two men.
“Dr Adele Banks”
The women sitting next to Gabby stood up.
“Dr Rory Mills, Dr Charlotte Fara, Dr Zachary Porter and Dr Gabby Jones”
Please give honest opinions.
