Matrimony is a major commitment in an individual’s lifetime. Whether the person marries over convenience or out of love for the significant other, there’s always a related outcome. Anne Bronte defines in her novel Agnes Grey, a coming of age story involving a young woman and the unique characters in her life, that if a couple’s conceiving of a matrimony carries negative intentions, it will ultimately receive a negative result. Rosalie, one of Agnes’s pupils, and her mother try to find her a “suitable” man to marry. However, their idea of a suitable man is distorted by their superficial views of society. Agnes, Rosalie’s governess, and her own mother understand what a marriage should consist of and what it means to maintain such an important engagement. In many instances, Bronte reveals throughout the novel that if one’s personal view on marriage is positive, the consequence will be positive as well, opposed to committing to a beneficial marriage.
