A person she’s despised for years just died, and she feels guilty about it. Emily and her grandpa had a fall out about two months before his death. They exchanged words that could not be taken back. It all started at a family dinner a month after her birthday.

It all started with, “Grandpa why he didn’t make it to my birthday party last month?”

He replied, “I was tired, so I decided to sleep.”

She said, “The least you could’ve done was call or shown up for a little bit.”

“It’s not my fault, I’ve been tired lately.”

“I told you 2 months in advance and that it meant a lot to me for you to be there.”

“Well I’m sorry I guess.”

“I’m sorry? That doesn’t make up for the 15 birthday parties you’ve missed and the pain you’ve put me through.”

Silence filled the dining room as she stormed out the room crying filled with anger. Her mom tried to comfort her, but she wasn’t having it. She demanded to go home because she didn’t want to be in the same household as her grandfather. Her mom drove her home and she cried herself to sleep knowing that her grandpa could care less about her. From there on out Emily never wanted to talk to her grandpa ever again and they never did. He never apologized and neither did she. She wanted nothing to do with him and didn’t care what happened to him until she got a call a month later.

Her mom called her saying, “Your grandpa died today.”

Emily was speechless and hung up the phone not saying one word. All she could think about was how she never got to say goodbye and most of all sorry. A month later she went to his funeral not knowing what to expect. Throughout the service all she could do was cry and think about the last time she saw him. As Emily was leaving the service her grandma gave her a note from her grandpa that he had wrote for her before he died.

It read,” I know I wasn’t the best grandpa to you and I never made it to any of your birthday parties. But I want you to know that I’ll always love you no matter what. I’m so sorry so everything, I hope you can forgive me.
Love always,
Grandpa”

She didn’t know what to think, but she knew that he had always loved her no matter what.
