interesting, or not interesting? I Never Made It To California by David Michael Dunbar is about a man that was 17 and was hitch hiking in mexico. He was picked up by various people along his way to where ever he was headed. One was a man in a caravan telling him how he'd like his cabin, he did not let him out and he was abducted, he took out a knife and held it to the driver's neck, he let him out then. He learned a few lessons then, and was picked up by an old couple, they were nervous, and the old man with a wrinkled face said he would roll the car if he tried anything, he didn't and the man ended up helping him. He was later picked up by a woman and her daughter, knowing how cautios the elderly couple had been he said to the woman "Ma'am I know you meant well, but please don't pick up strangers who could harm you and your little girl".
The forces of conflict in this story are the hitch hiker, and the people who offered to drive him, although specifically the man driving a caravan. The man driving at first was not part of a conflict, rather he was helpful, but soon turned into conflict when he did not let the hitch hiker out, also the hitch hiker was a force of conflict because he was not allowed to be let out, took action resulting in the conflict.
The climax of the story was when the hitch hiker put a knife to the man and yelled, "You let me out now!" because one force (hitch hiker) definitely triumphs over the other force (driver of the Van) this conflict started because the driver abducted him and would not let him leave, resulting in both forces colliding, although the hitch hiker ultimately topped the driver.
The emotional climax does not occur at the same time as the climax, the climax which consisted of the conflict between the two forces took place in the van, the emotional climax did not come out until later. The hitch hiker was picked up by a woman and her daughter in the back seat, this is the emotional climax, this is when he realized he was not the only man that looked friendly up close, the van driver who abducted him had been exactly the same, and he realized if that man were in his place right now it would be this woman and her daughter that would have to suffer, they were innocent, they only tried to help. He gave them a last sentence of advice, "Ma'am I know you meant well, but please don't pick up strangers who could harm you and your little girl".
Incidents preceding the climax were the various other drivers that picked up the hitch hiker, such as the elderly couple who picked him up and were nervous about the strange man in the car and said, "you pull anything and i will roll this car". The other incidents include the 3 other drivers that were not clearly mentioned in the story, and when he was in the van with the man moments before the conflict, the man detaining him. There is the definite suspense taking place right then and there the man saying "you'd like it there, at my cabin...", the hitch hiker realizes he cannot leave without conflict and then is the highest point, he pulls out his knife and holds it to the driver.
The story is conclusive, it says how not long after the same man who had abducted him abducted two children, and he learned his lesson and hopes the same for the woman and her daughter.
