Is this punishment too cruel?

I am the proud owner of a male golden retriever, he is usually very well behaved but he acts up sometimes. I used to spray him with a squirt bottle when he misbehaves but that was soon ineffective. Now, I sometimes have to mix a little salt in with the water for it to be effective. Not a very high amount, usually just 1 or 2 tablespoons of salt per bottle.
However, this came up in conversation with my neighbour one day, and he seemed shocked. He said it was cruel and I should stop. Is this considered cruelty? Even as a form of punishment?
 
well it all depends if your doing it every day or just sometimes does he act up alot if so not the best punishment but if only every once in awhile i think its fine or flip him in the nose
 
I would consider it cruel if it is getting in the dogs eyes. Salt water stings! I personally don't like the spray bottle punishment. When we got one of our dogs (RIP Katy) she had been trained with that and she was terrified of any running water and would cower at the site of a spray bottle.
 
Thats cruelty to animals, and can cause serious blindness and heart issues

Stop that!. That's very bad just teach your dog how to properly behave not punish him by spraying him with a salt solution. Just shh him and a little tap on his shoulder when he misbehaves. BE NICE. Stop the cruelness!
 
Well it is cruel and it isn't. Have you ever swam in the ocean? Salt water in the eys is very painful for humans - I can't imagine how painful it is for dogs. If you're squirting the dog in the back of the head I don't see how salt water changes anything - if it is in the face where it could get in the eyes, I would suggest you stop - if it is in the mouth, there is no harm done. I would try lemon juice in the mouth. It caught on fast for my neighbour's Whippet and my eldest German Sheperd.

i was shocked to find out that there was a pepper spray collar that you could activate by remote if your dog was bad.

i dunno i wouldnt do it to my dog because salt in the eye is painful for me and could well cause eye issues. i think more to the fact labs and retrivers are prone to eye problems anyway

however its not really my place to say
 
You should NOT spray your dog with saltwater! It can really sting his eyes! You should just tell him in a firm voice "NO" when he misbehaves. And especially if he's generally well behaved you shouldn't have to do that.
