my friend has a quote taken from American Dad that says "one's true value is determined solely through the eyes of others." In what context was this said...was this said as a serious quote or was it a joke. in what context was this said?

Stan quoted this, when his daughter asked him why he cared so much for other people's opinion.
He said he has quoted it from Genesis, probably the first album. However, I can't find this phrase in lyrics nor the bible.

definitely a joke
