Is this something I should be worried about?

I'm in my mid-teen years. I first gotten my period last year. I only had it three times. They all lasted for a week. Sometimes it would be light and some days they would be heavy. After the third time, I haven't gotten it until nine months later (which is this month). So, I knew I was pretty irregular. Between the nine months, I always seemed to have discharge (so, I always had to wear a panty liner). I've had false alarms for a day when I'd find a small drop of blood on it. I finally got my period back this month. The first few days were like how it was when I had false alarms between the nine months; however, it started getting heavier. I've had it for 12 days now, and it's still pretty heavy. I read that if it goes over 10 days then I should see a doctor (but my mom keeps telling me it's just because I haven't had it for a while). Is this normal? Is there something wrong? Should I be concerned? Is there any way or foods that I could eat that may result in lighter periods (possibly shorter, too)? I read that taking birth control pills result in shorter and lighter periods, but I don't want to take those, so that is NOT an option. I have a lot of plans to attend to this week. I want it over already!
