Is this true? You can't eat Sardines while hunting.?

Deer season in California Region D11 is next week. So this weekend I was busy sighting in my Marlin 62 in .256 Winchester Magnum for the last time.

Several other hunters were there for exactly the same reason. So we were talking and had something to eat before we went back to shooting. The other guys had some cholesterol clogging bacon wrapped hot dogs from the trailer. I had my favorites, sardines with crackers. Omega 3 don't you know. Got to have your fish every week. As long as they are packed in pure olive oil and salt, and nothing else, I LOVE sardines. I can live on them for days when I am camping. And they pack flat and you can put a lot of them in a backpack.

So I was eating my beloved sardines, and I mentioned I love to eat them while camping and hunting. And one of the guy's Dad said that was a foolish idea. Sardines had a very powerful odor, and that it was foolish to take sardines hunting. Is this true? Do sardines have a powerful odor that drives away deer? Is this common knowledge?
