...hand clapping? It's an old Buddhist analogy/metaphor.
In simple words, the answer is: It depends what it is clapping against.
This is a metaphor for the diversity of human personality, say if you are interacting with a child. Your attitude would be different. And say if you were interacting with the Japanese prime minister, your attitude would also be different.
Same with the hand-clapping analogy. A hand clapping against wood makes a different sound when it is clapping against glass.
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
Silence.
The silence represents our true self, without the interference of outsiders.
