Jeep idle at start problem.?

my 1997 Jeep GC 4x4 4.0 won't idle. the engine will only start and run if i keep my foot on the pedal. after a few minutes of that then it work, but if i just do a normal start it won't stay in idle.

Engine is cold, it needs to warm up, especially if its not fuel injected. However, im pretty sure your jeep is fuel injected, its most likely a matter of the engine being to cold to continuously combust the gas unless extra fuel is being added into the mixture (i.e. when you push the gas peddle its adding more fuel).
