I'm Christian who is unhappy about how the Church has unnecessarily deviated from original Judaism. I'm thinking to convert to Judaism and I'm trying to find out more about the different sects of Judaism.

I knew that Reform and Reconstructionist are the most liberal movements, but I found a thread here that I didn't expect.

This guy
- fire-dances for some fire god named Fenris
- he's an atheist, and doesn't believe in the literal existence of Fenris
- and doesn't believe in the literal existence of God either (since he's an atheist, remember)
- but attends a Reform synagogue (for fun I guess)
- people from his Reform synagogue know all this about him
- yet they invited him to become Jewish, knowing all this about him.

Is this sort of thing normal? Is it normal for people in the Reform Judaism movement to have such liberal religious beliefs? I'm not sure what to say and would love to hear some feedback.
EddieJ, Thanks for reminding me. It's not Saturday yet where I am. Do Reform Jews observe the Sabbath?
EddieJ, Thanks for the "sundown on Friday" clarification.

First, be aware that it is currently the Jewish Sabbath, so you might not get as many answers as you'd like.

Second, Reform Jews aren't very judgmental.. Of course, you can find exceptions.

Some Reform synagogues are more liberal than others.

The most important point seems to be that the guy doesn't believe in the literal existence of Ferris.

However, perhaps the real point is that they don't take his "mishegas" about Ferris seriously.

Edit: Yes, Reform Jews observe Shabbat, but that means a family dinner, lighting candles and attending services. It doesn't mean they won't drive or even go to work after services. Shabbat starts at sundown on Friday.

That is a FALSE issue and has been disproved numerous times. Llisten to Jews and not the 'messianics' and their supporters.

Yes, Reform Jews observe their sabbath. Some are on the computer, most aren't.

JP admits he could NOT convert to Judaism.

To convert to ANY branch of Judaism, u have to swear to worship the gd of Abraham and only him. My friend was a Heathen and converted, she had to swear she gave up her earlier beliefs and swear to god and only god.

check out JP's answer - that's who the 'messies' drag out to "prove" Reform Jews will take anyone. They're lying.

It is not so much that reform Jews feel the need to adopt people with varying beliefs, but that they will accept them. In truth, many attendants to Reform synagogues are actually atheist or on the verge of becoming atheist. I see reform Judaism as the gateway to the Jewish faith. Either people are experimenting entering the religion or they are tentative about leaving it. Also, reform studies are different everywhere you go. Some are a little more conservative than others, and visa versa. You may want to take in a few more opinions than just mine, but I believe most people will agree with me on this.
