As with most jokes, it's your perspective that makes it funny. If you think about it from the chicken's perspective, it's obvious and probably not as funny. Also, you need to free your mind in order to get yourself to that laughing place... this joke really doesn't do it for most Americans. It's usually the surprise factor that makes most people laugh. If it doesn't come as a surprise, you probably aren't going to laugh.
