Actually I prefer both and recommend both to people interested in learning. Many of the traditional Karate dojo also offer Judo as part of their classes. I have offered both since opening my dojo in 1992 and feel that they compliment each other very well. My Sensei required all of us to train in Judo when we reached brown belt. We had to earn our green belt in Judo to qualify to test for shodan in Karate. His philosophy was that both systems were studied by Gichin Funakoshi Sensei so his student should heed that as an example and I am glad he taught us that way.

Karate comes in many flavors. Some is very flowery and full of worthless kicks and silly blocks. Some is done very effectively and weeds out the less effective techniques more common to "traditional" karate. Where you train, who your instructor is, and what system they use is very VERY important to the real world application of any martial art.

In that spirit, judo is almost always trained with resisting opponents. It relies much less on rigid kata, and usually involves open sparring/randori which leads to a more effective style. In my opinion, it is the more desirable art to train in.

That being said, neither is inherently "better" than the other. Explore many styles of martial arts and learn on your own what works and what doesn't. Take what works and make it yours. Take what doesn't and throw it in the trash.
