Just became Vegan. The food is easy, but what about the other stuff?

I also want to avoid animal products in personal care items. Soap, shaving gel, shampoo, etc. Are any "normal" brands vegan, or do I have to go to Whole Foods and get the all-natural stuff that costs five times as much? (I'm poor) I'm sure there's other stuff I never would have thought of that's not vegan, like photographic film or gel-cap medicine. I'd rather not be constrained to the health food stores due to cost, but is there anything out there that's not based on animal products?

I understand this is a rather exhaustive question, but if anybody has any resources - books or web sites - that are reliable and a good list of vegan and not vegan non-food items, please let me know. Thanks.

There's a website: http://www.vitacost.com that sells the Jason brand of organic/vegam hair/skin care products at a fraction of the cost that whole foods and wild oats sell the same brand. It's $5 for shipping no matter how large your order and they also sell organic/vegan vitamins and supplements. I don't know if they sell makeup, but I know Arbonne does, but I'm not sure if it's vegan or just "all natural."

You can also look for a local health food store, sometimes their prices are better than the mega chain stores.

Also, be aware that almost all capsule type medicines/vitamins, etc. are NOT vegan and contain gelatin - I'm sure you've done your research on gelatin and if not, you should b/c it's disgusting and I wouldn't recommend anyone EVER ingesting gelatin.

No matter where you go, even on line for "vegan approved" product you are going to pay through your freakin nose. That crap is soooooooooooo expensive and it's not as good as the "regular" products.

And another thing, a lot of that stuff is just regular products with a "vegan approved" label and the price jacked up.

Welcome to "Alice in Vegan Land".

And the minute your vegan friends find you "cheating" you become like a leper. They are fanatics. Good luck!!!

PETA vets all sorts of products and so if you go to their website you can find regular brands that are vegan and dont' test on animals.
