...over? I just took out the old one and fitted the new one. Didnt change HT leads or anything. Is there anything i should of done ie timing or is it a case that new distributor (got it from a breakers) is bust too? Any ideas
Its a '97 1.6. Coil is inbuilt in distributor.

Have you checked the distributor for rotation. What I'm getting
at here is. Is the timing belt broke. If the distributor is not
turning, you may have snapped your timing belt. It sounds like
you need to do some more troubleshooting here.

Good Luck to You

you didn't give a rear or motor size, did you mark the old position of the distributor ? you might have to pull out the spark plug.find the tdc and reset the distributor on the #1 spark and if it still don't work maby its the coil or the electronic spark control or something like that

it depends on how its driven...of its an off set dog it will only fit in one way but if its worm driven then it may be in the wrong place...it should have been fitted with the rotor arm pointing in the same direction as the original.....

out with no1 plug,
hand brake off,
second gear,engine switched off.
pull forwards with finger over plug.
stop when you feel air passing ya finger.[its nearing TDC on comp stroke]
now you need the piston at tdc,i use an old ariel in the plug hole, pull slowly till its at tdc.
find out your fifing order, normally 1,3,4,2 but youll need to know if its clockwise or anti...
then simply put the correct leads on starting with no1....and after all that if it doesnt start you may need another disdsy.

EDIT...a good answer above doesnt deserve a thumbs down.......
