Hi all,

Looking for a wee bit of advice please! I am moving to Germany soon for a year and want to start a Martial Art. But I don't know which one to go for? Karate or Jitsu? Any recommendations and reasons would be helpful! I would also like to compete when I get to a suitable level. I'm 21, female if that makes any difference!
Also if you have any fitness tips that I can do before I go, that would also be helpful!

Thanks

i do tae kwon do, and i think it is really fun. so id say karate. but jitsu, is probably more agressive. so if you like agression go for jitsu.

Waite until you get there, take a look at the options and .... well pick one.

If you look at the effectiveness of different martial arts, you will find that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (which I'm assuming you're referring to) is among the top. I like BJJ because it gives you a distinct set of skills that will enable you to overcome your attacker when the fight hits the ground, because it will. Kickboxing is great, but with someone bigger and stronger than you, leaving it up to chance (the chance you could get hit with a knockout punch) is better left alone. Another benefit of BJJ is even if you are knocked down by a punch, your attacker has to come down and finish you, and BJJ teaches many techniques of defense and attack from the bottom position. You can train hard every day, or as much as you want, and not get all beat up.
While there are some respectable fighters with Karate backgrounds, especially for a woman, this is going to be ineffective unless you have the element of surprise. Do yourself a favor and check them both out, see which you like more. Also, check out the background of UFC fighters, all have BJJ experience, many extensive experience. Few have Karate backgrounds. Keep an open mind, although my writing doesn't seem that way, I do have one as well! Most importantly, have fun!
