keeping apps from an iPad?

My brother just gave me his iPad, which has quite a few games on which he's paid for. I read on the internet something about being able to have the apps on 5 different computers, but I'm not sure how. If I just sync it with my laptop will it delete all the games? What should I do to make sure they don't get deleted, but I can still put my music etc on it
