Kenwood TM-V71 Programming Issues?

I have just purchase my Kenwood TM-V71. The programming cable is a serial port. My computer does not have a serial port, so I purchased a usb to serial converter. I have plugged this into my notebook computer, and to the programming cable. The software that was downloaded from kenwood is suppose to allow me to receive and write information to my tranciever. I keep getting a communications error.
Has anyone had this problem, and do you know how to fix it.
 
Check with the manufacturer of your USB-toSerial cable for a current driver. Most of these type of converter cables require a driver to be installed for the device to function properly. (at least if your are using Windows----I found that these type of cables work natively with Linux---at least that's what my experience is.) Hope this helps.
