I just turned fourteen and since my parents couldn't think of anything, they pretty much letting me choose my present. I really want to learn some sort of fighting style (No not so I can go beat someone up I just have an interest in it).
The only problem is I'm not really sure which is the best choice for me.
I have a very short attention span, which I know will probably be a problem, but usually if I'm really into something, I make sure I do it right.
And I don't really have a lot of patience, but I've sort of learned to endure if I must (but whichever is slightly more fast paced would probably be better)
Overall I don't have very much upper body strength, but I'm pretty good at lower body (thanks to years of soccer) and I have pretty good reaction timing.
I can sometimes be slow to pick things up cause I'm a daydreamer, but I can learn usually with practice, and a lot of times I get a little competitive with forcing myself to get better.
Can anyone explain the exact difference between the three and which would probably be the best choice for me?

karate is not a specific martial art. kickboxing is. judo, mui-tai, tae-kwon-do, etc. But a mixed martial arts instructor (like some karate instructors) is the way to go. These types of sensai know a wide range of martial arts and will teach you the best of all of them. This combination is required for your skills to actually be useful against someone else who knows how to fight. You can start now by watching MMA (UFC, Pride, Stikeforce, Dream) more frequently.

Kickboxing and Karate are Martial arts. Kickboxing I think would be better its much harder to lose focus in a class like kickboxing and its much more fast paced then karate. Kickboxing is good for fitness, fighting and self defence. Also kickboxing will increase your upper body and lower body strength.

You're describing me exactly! I started kickboxing at 14 and thrived in it for 8 years so i'll recommend kickboxing for you definately

Kickboxing, Karate, or Martial Arts? Well the first two ARE Martial Arts so I'm not really clear what you think Martial Arts is.. and from what you described take kickboxing. I do Muay Thai kickboxing its great.

Kickboxing for the win.
I love boxing to begin with, but when I was fifteen I got into kickboxing and loved it.
So I suggest trying that, though for certain things you are going to want to have patience.
But from what it sounds like I think you'd be pretty darn good at it.
Hope that this helps.
Peace?:)

P.S.- Happy Birthday!

First of all, kickboxing, karate are both martial arts. I teach both of them as well as (TKD) TaeKwonDo. All of them have good things about them. The problem is that you have to decide which one to study! After reviewing what you told me, I would recommend either karate or TKD. I say that because you said you don't have much upper body strength and kickboxing is a lot of upper body. That could be helpful later on but to start off you need to learn something traditional so you can learn to lengthen your attention span, gain more patience within yourself. Most traditional martial arts(karate,TKD) are better prepared to help you accomplish this than sport martial arts like kickboxing. I know some people out there are going to say "they are all sports"but karate and TKD have a traditional side as well. I hope this helps you decide! SuaKaow
