Laptop screen goes blank after start-up?

After i turn my laptop (Dell Studio 1535) on and it go's through the start up process, when it should be showing the log-in page it go's black but you can still see and move the mouse pointer.

Also when it is on the loading screen with the windows logo all it shows is the loading bar and no windows vista logo.

Any suggestions?
