laptop screen scrambled and now wont work at all. help?

i have an HP pavillion running windows XP. after only a few seconds of startup the screen got seriously scrambled and the whole PC froze. i had to hard power down. now when i try to power back on the screen doesnt work at all. the LEDs all light up and i think a fan is running, but i think thats it. i tryed powering down then back on again a handful of times all with the same result. im not too computer savvy but im guessing this is a hardware issue. can someone please tell me what it may be and also what i need in order to fix it? thanks.
