laptop wont connect to the internet via ethernet cord(vista)?

let me give u all the facts...
i have a gateway running on vista...my internet will connect locally and i no its probly some settings but i cant seem to figure out which and now i was play with the settings and CANT CONNECT wireless eihter so please help me out here i want to cry.,...THANKS A BUNCH IN ADVANCE...PLUS ANY1 WHO HELPS ME GETS 10 POINTS(BY HELP I MEAN ACTUALLY GET ME UP AND RUNNING)...thanks gracias
 
i had the same problem after reinstalling vista on my laptop. it is probably just the ethernet port drivers. you may need the drivers such as broadcom or whichever your laptop needs. if not then it probably is a seting which you cant find. try going into network setting or internet setting and changing the connection.

try to ping if it works that its your modem so then try reseting the modem and make sure all cord are plugged in all the way
