Left 4 Dead and BioShock Sound Problems?

I just recently got BioShock and Left 4 Dead for the PC, yeah! So I installed them and besides BioShock taking a long time to load up and Left 4 Dead's occasional lag here and there, they work like charms and I love em'! But one thing above all else is bothering me so... the sound. Everything seems fine until there's a lot of action and noise going on. For instance in BioShock when I get down to where there's the sign that says this way to Neptune this way to Medical, the alarm goes off and all the Splicers close in, the sound gets choppy and skips a lot, and the game freezes but it still plays, the noise however annoys me.
Same with Left 4 Dead only in there, it happens more often. I've come to the conclusion that it just might be my sound card isn't compatible with the games, or there's something that needs to be fixed. Any suggestions on what to do? Any sound fixes I can be redirected to? And if it is the sound card not being compatible, is there some way I can change the sound quality to match mine? My sound card is a Realtek, High Definition Audio and my Video Card is an ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics - is this good for these games?
