Hi I just picked up a 2009 ES350 this summer. When I got it I noticed the S Mode option next to Drive. At the dealer they said its the semi automatic transmission but they didn't tell me when and if I should use it. My friend said that he races his Lexus using it but you have to shift right at a certain time or you will over rev (Due to a lag in the shifting time) I thought that was a little strange so went to the dealer where I bought it and they said that It should only be used when going down hill. But not much other than that. 1 Is this true? and 2 if its only to be used downhill how would I use it because I feel that your RPMs really don't go up much when your going downhill.
Its a 6-Speed Transmission

I typed in " S mode lexus transmission 09 ? " and was surprised at the lack of Information found considering this is a nice ride a car that is full of class good taste and a little something for everyone which I eventually figured out through reading through some forums who had not a clue really until I finally found a review of a 2013 lexus that explained briefly what I guess they expected people to know automatically what the S mode is for.
Anyhow forget the down hill plan that was an idiot salesman who didn't know squat making up something and probably not the best guy to ask although I probably would have too which makes us Intelligent anyway because it seems logical to me as well.
As I was getting to this is a very sophisticated automobile and what the S mode is for is the sport enthusiast. It is not only for the transmission it also changes the logarithms of the computer for faster throttle response on and off the throttle and is designed to put more fuel quicker to build up rpm which makes the horsepower build up faster. The computer is not going to let you harm the engine so when you feel the power come on and stick your butt in the seat ( my favorite part) this is what S mode is for. And apparently it will not run out of steam until you get well past 130 mph for what its worth so check with your friend who has been on the track he had it right on the money for what S mode is for. So leave it in the other modes when not racing and when you feel the S mode feeling coming on you know know what its for so have fun and remember anything over 100 mph on a public roadway is an instant felony now as cops tend to get over testosterone when you drive like them.
