LG Shine KE970 Mobile - can i change the message settings ?

When i recieve an sms, only the senders number is shown and not their name even though they are in my contacts list. How can i change this? I find it extremely annoying and have never had a phone do this before, given it is a new phone i would expect more.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated... =0)
