free the slaves? Or would they have said that emancipation was just another bleeding heart socialist initiative designed to take money out of the pockets of hard working Republicans? Would they have said that if slaves wanted to be free... that they should free themselves instead of looking to society for their freedom?
If it wasn't about slavery, then why do Republicans keep reminding us that it was Lincoln, a Republican, who freed the slaves? And that this somehow represents proof that Republicans are really the true friends of African Americans...rather then Democrats? :)
Good comments, Nikola. Worth consideration.

Did they fight for Sotomayor? Can you name a single issue since 1970 that Republicans have fought for minorities? They claim they are not Racist, but they sure play racist on every occasion. They hated Obama before he ever opened his mouth, they called him the worst President ever in November a whole negative 2 months in office.
BTW Slavery was also an economic issue, and you KNOW where they stand on that issue.

I'm guessing the bulb in the lamp has burned out here.Republicans would have fought just like they always have.

The Republican party THEN is nothing resembling what it is now.

Well, considering that the war was not about slavery your question is moot.

Abraham Lincoln "was a racist who opposed equal rights for black people, who loved minstrel shows, who used the N-word, who wanted to deport all blacks," a veteran journalist and historian says. "There has been a systematic attempt to keep the American public from knowing the real Lincoln and the depth of his commitment to white supremacy," says Lerone Bennett Jr,.a black historian, whose new book, "Forced Into Glory: Abraham Lincoln's White Dream," examines Lincoln's record.

Ok so the civil war was about slaves. Then why is no credit extended to those white abolitionists and soldiers who died to "defeat slavery?"

Do the likes of Rev. Wright distinguish between whites of different ideological strains or do they use the blanket "white."

The message is guilt is a racket, and slavery was defeated by whites, who incidentally were the first people on the planet to ban its practice but not the first or last to use it.

No. From the racism displayed in the faux tea parties and visual smears about Obama at the town hall health-care meetings to the blatant attacks on the new Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, Lincoln wouldn't recognize the current state of his marginalized political party.

I'm with DAR and Nikola on this one.

Lincoln wasn't an abolitionist as Whig nor even as a Republican, early on. In fact, he proposed a bill to the Illinois legislature intended to weaken the abolitionists' movement.

Of course they would. But you are probably blinded by the lie that all Republicans are racist.

I would most certainly stood with Lincoln for the abolition of this terrible practice. Question is would today's democrats do the same , or would they justify slavery the same way they do welfare, that we have to take care of people for their own good.

Why you look backwards ,look forwards and sure you are going to win beautiful America .Or am I a dreamer ?

lol. these republicans won't even accept hispanics into their party...do you think they would support blacks?

Yes.

No. B/c we were against it from the beginning.

No.

B/c it was his idea.

We didn't put them back in chains. The economic chains of welfare.

I've never owned a slave, and I don't know anyone who does. So Lincoln's "fight" would probably be an easy one.

The hard part would be digging himself out of that grave, and then reanimating his flesh.

Today's Republicans wouldn't have been on-board with that.
