If they didn't want him to play because Liverpool were "chicken", then 'Pool just would've put that into the contract arrangement before they accepted the bid from Chelsea..
I think it's more of a safety thing to ensure the fans don't get too agitated. Though playing at Stamford Bridge I wouldn't think there would be THAT much of a problem..
