Looking for the name or author of a book (potentially series of books)?

I read a book (potentially 2) in the 7th grade and I cannot remember the name of the book(s) or author. So here is what I remember. It was quite funny and adventurous. The main character ends up in Cuba during the Spanish-American war, has some interaction with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. I think he may have attended West Point. He does a lot of carousing with women (which doesn't always end well), and has some trouble with the law. I think it starts out as a Western, he may or may not start as a bandit on the run. Comedy of errors love, adventure, war... good stuff.

Anyways, if anyone knows what I am talking about, I would much appreciate your help.
