Low or high gain for my amp/headunit?

On my headunit I have the choice of low or high gain and a dial on my amp to turn it up/down.

The maximum volume I can go at the minute before things get crazy is about 18-22 depending on the song but the maximum it can go is 60, 30 if the headunit gain setting is low.

I'd like to go higher with the volume so what do I change with the gain settings? It's currently on high for the headunit and about 1/3 up on the amp dial.

It's a 12" bass enclosure if that helps.

turn it down half way and start for there..SLOWLY turn the vol up on the h/u.you can turn the gain up/down depending on the beating you are giving your subs.until you hit the sweet spot.that sounds the best..good luck
