Lunging on the right, or 'far' side is really hard for my horse. Once he gets going it's fine, but he'll sometimes stop and turn to face me, and it'll take me 5-10 minutes to get him going again (after pulling in my line, going to him, standing and calming him for a moment, slowly working my way onto that side, then getting him going again).
I just began to work him again after winter, so I'm keeping sessions short and easy, and realize he will challenge me. However, somedays he is WONDERFUL on his left side, and then I go to change and it's a struggle.
I do know that he used to be a carriage horse, could it be that they whip them on their right side?
He doesn't even let me lead him from the right side (yes I know, you are supposed to do it from the left, but I suppose I should begin with that) ... but otherwise when grooming and such, he is not shy from that side, just leading or working.
Reasons why he could be doing this? I am pretty sure I am not giving him confusing signals, and have not hit him on that side or anything (I don't even use a longing whip, I use body language, although yes there are occasions when a whip would be handy!) I will just keep on working with him daily but any tips to help him improve and overcome it? Thanks!
(note: he is not 'my' horse, it's simply easier to say that... he is a neighbor's horse who i am working with, with permission and guidance and all....)
