Man arrested for 2x4 labeled "High Powered Rifle"

The whole "we keep our government in check" argument is so laughable as to come right round the other side of the debate and become fodder for conspiracy nuts.

It's also interesting to speculate on the reaction of the pro-gun lobby had the fundamentalists at Waco been Muslim fundamentalists...

I think the way "we keep our government in check" argument is presented by most people is completely ridiculous and borderline Alex Jones (big conspiracy theorist) quality. However I do think the fact that many Americans owning firearms definitely has influence on any policy or decision made by politicians in some respects.

As far as the statements "rifles aren't going to resist the military in all its force" . . . . I think there's a lack of understanding the oath and beliefs of many personnel in the military. I know a number of guys who would rather put a bullet in whomever tells them to go against the American people before they go into their own homeland with their friends, family and loved ones and start killing/detaining them. It's not as simple as turning the military or policing forces on the people they are meant to protect, and who are from the population that volunteers to serve in those positions.

Sorry if it seems like I'm being a jerk. You have a hardline way of posting and it'll take me a few exchanges to figure out the best way to say things without sounding like a complete douchecanoe.

Politicians respect money and very little else. There needs to be a massive uproar before public opinion enters into their thinking - look at SOPA, it took a massive campaign to get Congress to climb off that landmine and that was against the movie industry, which doesn't have a fraction of the influence of the NRA.

That is why the 'defence against tyranny' argument is stupid. If it ever comes down to people vs government, the winning side is the one that the military picks. Rednecks with rifles aint gonna do a damn thing if the US Air force decides it is siding with Washington.

Well just remember, the middle eastern equivalent of rednecks with rifles have done quite a bit in the past few decades. Not saying paramilitary forces are on par with the US military but considering their effect on past conflicts in that region, it'd be premature to completely dismiss them.
The fact that they're able to blend in is part of that. The fact that they're operating from mostly ungoverned regions which noone is willing to commit the manpower to legitimately occupy is another.

No problem, have a great Christmas, Semper Fi

All I can tell you folks of the British culture is that Ruby Ridge happened here in Idaho and people remember. Many people here feel about the Federal govt the way the Catholic northern Irish feel about the govt of Great Britain. Only Alaska outdoes us in the sheer amount of wilderness area. You probably would have to live here to understand us and a whole lot more to agree with us. At any rate happy holidays to you.

I agree with your first point. Your second paragraph . . . discussing that would be a WHOPPER of a thread. Except your redneck stereotyping, there are plenty of city dwellers, cowboys, and northerners who share what you're blanketing the redneck philosophy to be.

Semper Fi, hope you had a good one as well.

It does shed a different light on things when you live in an area you actually do go hunting to fill your fridge up, and the closest grocery/gas is 30 miles away. As far as the U.S. goes, it would be nice if city/urban folk stayed with some rural folk for a bit to understand that way of life and thinking, same as rural folk living in a city/urban environment to understand them. Maybe they would have a better time with gun regulation/control if they split the debate into rural/urban instead of trying to blanket 350 million people into one category.

If you read my post and Mitlov post #70, you will understand.

BOTH rifles are the same. They can hold the same amount of ammo, have the same caliber ammo, because they are the same make. The only thing that changed was the stock....not the function.

A change in stock will not change the function...both rifles are made by the same manufacturer.

In fact, take the first and outfit it with the stock from from the second.

The stock does not make the second more lethal.

When both have the same hi-cap mags, they are equally lethal.

On a lasting note, the "appearance" of a weapon, esp a firearm, does not change that weapon's lethal function

A.) With Columbine and the recent slaying, those gunmen obtained guns from someone-somewhere else. *Guns that were first purchased legally. It took mentally off-balance people to use those guns illegal.

B.) And not to trump a sexist card, but why is that males seem to perform mass slayings with firearms more than their female counterparts?

I like the idea of certification, as certain class firearms and accesories have to have some documentation.

However, even if all of the guns-gun owners were certified, that still brings us to "A.)"

I'm sure there's a witty remark about green to respond with in reference to the Libyan conflict, but I've got nothing.

In all seriousness, "mujahadeen" is just Arabic for "redneck." They can give cutting-edge militaries hell when they're fighting on their home turf.

Small Continental forces against British (Guerilla like tactics)
Small French or Russian forces against Germans
Small Viet Cong forces against U.S. (Guerilla like tactics)

Per a sport term; "Home Field Advantage"

Well admittedly the russian example owes quite a bit to the ability of specialized sniper units to stall and harass a force that they can't directly defeat on their own - something the russians learned in their war with finland years earlier and which is not terribly common in para groups.

But the russians in afghanistan are a good example.

A bit off topic, but Eastern guerilla fighters have been using these kinds of tactics for decades. There are a few books by H. John Poole worth looking into, who has spent time analyzing small unit tactics by our enemies who were forced to adapt against the superior firepower of the US. And they adapted quite well. "Phantom Soldier" is a good one to start with.

Especially once they've had training and weapons (including anti aircraft) from the CIA ................

Man arrested for 2x4 labeled "High Powered Rifle"

Training foreign countries always has this issue. MI6 is in Syria right now doing the same with Wahhabi fundamentalists.

Man arrested for 2x4 labeled "High Powered Rifle"

The point I was making is the average American doesn't have access to to that training or those weapons , so in the (highly unlikely) event of American citizens "rising up" against the government , the fight would still be very one sided.

Don't you think a significant revolution in the US would demand attention from outside parties?

I don't suppose the average syrian or lybian had Stingers during the formative stages of their revolutions.

Not saying it's a fair fight by any stretch or that the US military isn't more formidable than previous examples, just that it's not nearly as black and white as many people would like to think. I mean really, ten years later and AQ still exists plus tons of offshoot and franchise organizations. Same for chechen separatists. The russians have been trying to put out that fire since the mid nineties.
