Given that tidbit of data, I'm not optimistic that enough Americans are educated sufficiently to grasp a complicated social issue like mental health nuances and mass weapon violence.

It's posts like these that remind me why I don't post here much anymore. Enjoy your America-bashing, folks. Let's not debate the specific differences between countries and why a policy that works well in country X may not work in country Y due to numerous differences between the countries. Let's simply state that AMERICANS SIMPLY ARE TOO DUMB TO "GET IT."

Great conclusion there buddy. Glad to see your post is getting "likes" from others as well. I'm out.

In a similar vein this story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20838729 made me cringe for 2 reasons

1/ It made me vaguely agree with Piers "Morgan" moron

and

2/ He might actually come back here and look for work again

Neither of these things are good.

I've definitely been one to voice my opinion on different occasions for what I've seen as anti-american sentiments that I believe to be ignorant and broad generalizations on this forum on a few different occasions. With people who live in countries that are the size of a state here, and a population that's a fraction of ours and how ridiculous the media is (especially the big international news) . . . I can say I'm understanding of a lot of things said whether I agree or not.

However, the comment you are referring to was made by a fellow American and in all honesty that ticked at a 1/10 on my anti-american radar. Threads have been shut down due to some comments and that was is nowhere near something deserving of harsh reprimand?

There are things that we as Americans need to take more responsibility for and education most certainly is one of them. Education on firearms for example, if people didn't make their assumptions/decision about it on emotions (from both sides) then maybe something good could come out of this all instead of nothing, or something that wont work.

The exact same argument gets fairly applied to a lot of different topics. When it comes to complicated issues, the general public is rarely equipped with the prerequisite information (or the desire to do the necessary learning) to make informed decisions.

It's why we elect representatives who we pay to be informed about the issues and are supposed to represent the views of their constituents - of course, that's the theory.

Somalia would figure in the top ten of US states by population, some other interesting comparisons here and here. California as the biggest US state would come in below Kenya, Texas below Nepal and only just above Afghanistan and once you've gone past Ohio you're into the Benin and Burundi's.

Utah with all those influential Mormons? On a par with Albania, whilst Wyoming slightly exceeds Suriname.

I'm not sure where all that leads, other than me thinking that if I want no neighbours I'm going to move to Wyoming

It is one of those bi-partisan charts to grab the attention of either side.

Almost like a psych ink blot test

I don't think that Americans lack intelligence, but there are those whom are a tad languorous to take upon a studious effort, but rather follow the general populace driven by emotion, chaos, and fear.

One has to look upon the past Presidential Elections as well as the Mainstream of current cultural influences.

The terms, PC (Political Correctness) and Modern Liberalism tend to be pejorative, but somehow have a stronghold on the current cultural influence

You seem to have taken my statement as anti-American, which was not my intention. I am very grateful to have been born an American over most other countries in the world. I was specifically responding to the opinion polls cited and how poorly prepared I feel many Americans are to discuss complex social problems reasonably. I could make the same criticism of several industrialized nations besides America, but that is hardly an acceptable excuse for poor public education standards/funding.

Wyoming has a lot of line dancing and drive-through liquor and ammo stores. No joke, seen 'em with my own eyes. You can literally drive your truck up to a window where a clerk will sell you alcohol and ammo at the same stand while you preserve calories sitting on your rump. It's very bourgeoisie.

What makes line-dancing any worse than swing-dancing or raves?

It's much easier to maintain a drive-through kiosk than a normal retail store. Smaller footprint, less employee time spent cleaning, less money spent on interior decorating, and no possibility of customer shoplifting. I've never seen a walk-in liquor store with one employee present, but it's easy to run a drive-through operation with one person. Drive-through = lower costs of operation for small-scale rural operations. Makes perfect sense for Wyoming.

Drive-through coffee kiosks are a dime a dozen in Oregon. There's one about every two or three blocks. A single employee can operate a drive-through coffee kiosk; good luck doing that with a coffeehouse.

It tasted like fruit punch N.O. Explode and Red Drink, and if that isn't freedom then I don't know what is.

Nothing wrong with line dancing. I just thought Mitch should be adequately prepared to purchase liquor and ammo if he builds his home on the range. The locals might be offended by his British accent, so if he's heavily armed and intoxicated, he'll blend in more readily.

Also, the point was that you can purchase ammo AND alcohol at the same kiosk while operating a motor vehicle. You don't see any potential problems with that system?

John, being from the east coast I always thought that once you were five miles from the kiosk that there was hardly any chance of seeing another person let alone running them over or shooting them?

The closest I got to the boonies was Camp Geiger in NC.

Good topic. I'm somewhat conflicted about my opinion. I'm in agreement with his overall intention but not the manner in which he approached it. Although, knowing that it would scare a bunch of children, especially after the events from CT are still so fresh, is pathetic. He's lucky he didn't get shot.

As for the issue of security, I wonder what it's gonna take for schools to finally realize that security is a huge issue. My sister is a high school teacher and has been a school teacher in general for about 6 or so years now. Through the different schools she's taught at, she said that the staff aren't even trained in what to do in such a situation and that security has always been either very weak or absent 99% of the time. She also happens to be a teacher in northern Virginia.

If we can't protect the lives of our children in schools, then what good are we? In that regard, I'm somewhat sympathetic toward this guy for attempting to take a stand and deliver an example (albeit, a scary one) to the nation. Overall I'm glad he got charged. He could have found a better way.
