A .44 semi-auto with 15-round magazines? I've never heard of such a gun. Who makes it? Last I checked, both the .44 Special and .44 Magnum were revolver cartridges, and the few semi-automatic pistols which ever fired it only had 7-8 rounds magazines. (Not to mention that .44 is usually a hunting cartridge, generally not one used for self-defense.)

I guess some people don't grasp the concept of an hyperbole.

I've heard people express similar skepticism about people who spend 5-10 hours per week every week preparing to fight off a hand-to-hand physical assault that, statistically speaking, will probably never happen in their lifetime.

Just sayin'. Martial artists live in glass houses when it comes to criticizing people who allegedly over-prepare for worst-case scenarios.

But not all martial artists train specifically to fend off that assault. I trained for the fun of it, and the exercise, and I would bet that a majority of martial artists do the same. OTOH, when you walk out of your house carrying, it really has only one purpose.
 
If you are drunk first, you definitely won’t be in "control" of a firearm. (Or anything else)

Some people do martial arts for self-defense. Some do it for recreation and exercise.

Some people who own firearms do it for self-defense. Some do it for recreation (sport competition, hunting) and exercise (biathlon, hiking while elk-hunting, etc).

There are people out there who don't understand why popping holes in a bulls-eye target with fast-flying pieces of lead is fun...but there are people who don't understand why choking another human being is fun. Glass houses. Stone-throwing.

Perhaps "assault type" firearms and mags over 20 rounds should be re-classed or written into the NFA, or a new "NFA"

When the NFA was drawn, "assault type" firearms and mags over 20 rounds were not upon the "times" for consideration.

This said, until such "new" NFA;

Ultimately, as a gun owner, one should take all precautions to secure such weapons so that these will not fall into the "wrong" hands.

For example, my firearms are secured in a steel gun-cabinet vault.

I had a uncle whom visited me, upon observation of my home, he had asked where were all my guns.

I took in to a special hidden passage wall, and my guns are in the vault.

He responded (in his country-hillbilly accent) I was crazy, that we were in America and should not have to hide our guns. To also add, he stated that my insurance should cover theft.

I told him that I was not concerned with theft loss, more I was concerned with a break-in and someone taking my guns, thus my guns into criminal circulation.

Upon leaving, he still thought I was nuts to go through all of the trouble.

Sometime after, someone broke into his house when he was not home and removed all of his firearms from his fancy-smancy, in the open oak cabinet. (Despite he had an alarm which he had installed so he could catch a intruder himself).

Later, one of his guns was used in a crime.

My uncle called me to his home and we designed, built a safe room and he had a gun vault delivered

I wanted to note, that he lives in the "country-side" where those folk actually leave their keys in their cars.

The target areas of break-ins is not so much metro areas, but suburban-low security

Guns are not the targeted bounty, but they are as easy to re-sell within the private sector

Just like how not everybody trains a martial art strictly for self defense, nor does everyone train the same in firearms. Some people like to shoot in competitions or go hunt and don't see it as in the same light as say someone training in a close quarter handgun course.

I understand , and have done , both.
What I don't understand is why you need a semi automatic weapon for target shooting , and to a lesser degree hunting.
In my (limited) experience , if you miss the animal they tend to leg it , along with everything else in the vicinity , so the option of being able to fire again immediately is less important.

Absolutely. But it's the argument that people want/need to carry that much firepower in the course of their day to day activities. It's not the training, it's the I need to carry a gun and near 50 rounds with me to go grocery shopping. Or the argument that you need a semi-auto rifle to protect ypour home. I haver limited, but sufficient knowledge of firearms, and have been in enough fights to know the effects of the adrelanine dump. And I know that if woken up from a deep sleep to confront intruders, you likely don't have the clarity and precision needed for small round shooting. A shotgun is a much more effective close range, enclosed space weapon.

As for rifles: if you wound but don't kill the animal, a quick follow-up shot is the difference between a quick-and-merciful death and it running for an hour while it bleeds out in intense agony.

As for target-shooting and pistols: why are semi-automatics used in many sport competitions? Why is choking someone, or striking a downed opponent, allowed in offtopic? Because those are the rules. Like choking, it's utterly harmless so long as the sport competitor doesn't turn around and use it in commission of a crime. Americans aren't the only people who use semi-automatic for sport; semi-automatic pistol shooting has been part of the summer Olympics continually since 1932.

Fair point , just the question of capacity then , the little hunting I've done was with a double barrel shotgun.



Maybe keep the weapons at the gun club ?

To me, that sounds like making choking illegal everywhere but offtopic competition...even making it illegal for self-defense. A young woman chokes out an individual trying to date-rape her? That should have been left at the BJJ club! Throw her in jail for illegal use of force.

Semi-automatic pistols can be used for sport or they can be used for self-defense or they can be used for commission of a crime...just like choking. We only make choking illegal if it's used in the commission of a crime.

Once again you're imputing something to me that I didn't say and isn't my position. Just because some one DISAGREES WITH YOU ABOUT HOW TO BEST PROTECT CHILDREN doesn't mean that they don't want to protect children.

The Columbine High massacre was committed with illegal guns bought on the black market. It disarms people who want to follow the law but it doesn't disarm people who are going to commit mass-murder anyway, because they don't care about the law.

That wasn't even what we were talking about. You took something I said in one point of the thread (we were talking about the purposes of semi-automatic pistols in sport or self-defense) and completely twisted it just to say I don't care about kids' lives.

I cannot say what's on my mind without violating the terms of service.

Most people who carry a concealed weapon legally do not carry extra ammunition. As for where they take it, as long as it's legally allowed I don't have a problem with it. I take mine virtually everywhere I can.

As for shotguns, yes they are ideal for home defense. However there are those whose homes extend for acres who live outside of the city. Not to mention you cannot always rely on just one or two attackers and thus may need the larger capacity to stop a threat. It's all subjective.

I think the difference is a matter of degree. When was the last time you heard of a mass choking? I am not against gun ownership but at what point is enough for self defense?

To be honest the argument about defending yourself against the government is pretty weak unless you allow people to own SAMs and anti-tank weapons.

As an LEO can I ask , just how common is is it to have multiples (we'll say 3 plus) attempt a home invasion or burglary ?
