Hundreds of thousands of rounds? I didn't fire that many rounds in US Marine Corps basic marksmanship training and basic infantry training and we went through a lot of rounds.

Besides I don't think people are saying you get a lifetime count and that's it. It's more like you can only buy so much at a time and then have a waiting period before you can buy more.

A had to re-read twice because I thought you were talking about buying "hundreds of thousands of rounds" rather then buy it in quantities of a hundred or thousand! For a second I was wondering how big of a stock pile you have.

If you were allowed to purchase bulk amounts of ammunition (since that's often cheaper) but had to have it sent to and stored at a range and leave what you didn't fire for future use, would you be opposed to that and think it still hinders responsible firearms practice to a severe enough degree? I think something like that may be somewhat helpful for city/suburb areas but with any suggestion it's often different for rural vs urban folk. A suggestion like that wouldn't work well for rural people who fire in their backyard.

As far as committing a horrible crime with a couple dozen rounds . . . well, a couple dozen people dead because the shooter could only get a hold on a couple dozen is potentially better then somebody who has 100 rounds committing a crime isn't it?

Hundreds OR thousands. Not hundreds OF thousands. Purchasing between 500 rounds and 2,000 rounds is purchasing "hundreds OR thousands" of rounds, and is common for people who practice regularly at the range. Yet all you need is a few dozen for an act of mass-murder.

Limiting access to bullets isn't the answer.

The amount of law enforcement bureaucracy needed to attempt to legislate ownership of bullets would be massive. As I said above, dollar-for-dollar, we'd save far more lives using those same funds to increase police presence in public areas.

And we could probably do that if we increased personnel, pay, and training for those positions and it probably would be a smarter move then spending money to legislate ownership of bullets. The only problem I see with that is that those would be state/federal funded pursuits meaning more income is either drained from other state/federal funded jobs . . . or taxes get raised a little. I would happily put in a couple more cents in state and federal taxes to help fund something like this though, especially since I'm living in an urban area. You would have to fight to get the rural folk onboard though.

Isn't one of the issues and justifications of widespread gun ownership that you can't (or indeed don't want to in many cases) rely on the police to protect you?

Yes, but the requirements for that protection are different from rural and urban environments where different resources are available. Ex: Cops would be at my apartment in 5 minutes or less here in DC. At my parents house in the woods . . . probably 45 minutes to an hour.

Self-defense and relying on police is not an either-or thing, just like seatbelts and airbags in cars. Police protection IS stretched too thin in rural areas, so people take measures for self-defense, but that doesn't mean that they would be upset if the federal government offered their sheriff's department a federal grant to put three new deputies on patrol.

On that note, I'm going to eject from this thread before COMPLETELY blowing my New Years' resolution the first week of January...

The fact that when I decide to order some rounds because it's time to use my own firearms and keep my skill/safety level fresh, I can't get them because 1 or 2 guys bought all the rounds up.

The only thing I've read is about the bill addressing high capacity magazines. We've discussed why that's not really a legitimate suggestion that will actually do much good in the thread to quite some extent. I've lost steam for interest in this subject for the moment due to trying to set some things up with boxing but I'll have to check your link out and do some further research on it to give a good opinion.

Edit - Just read the link you posted : P. Week or so old story. Hopefully he's not on a CIA/FBI terrorist watch list now.
