Plenty of media are calling them Russian. I posted they were Russians several pages back when they were first IDed because that's what all the media was calling them. You are hearing them referred to more being from Chechnya now partially because it shows that they have more info on them now and partially because that area of Russian is said to have strong middle eastern ties.
 
They do? This is new to me. What ties other than the religion of Islam do they have similar to the middle east? The chechen/kazakh/uzbek style of Islam comes from the Volga Bulgars mixed with Mongol culture. It's very different from the Mid East style of Islam.
 
Well to Muslims that can often be a pretty big tie can't it?
One reason Muslim's from non-muslim countries can convince themslves to plant bombs is because they feel more kinship with muslim's they've never met 3000 miles away than they do for a non-muslim they see every day that live next door.
 
The similaraties between a Chechen Muslim and a Middle Eastern Muslim could be the same as a Russian Orthodox to a Mormon or a Catholic to a Quaker.

Volga Bolgar (East Russian/Mongolian) Islam is very different to your typical Sunni's, Shia's.

Might be interesting to note. Al Qaeda are Wahabi, as far as I know most "Islamist" or "Muslim" terrorists have been Wahabi.

Calling Wahabi's and Muslims all the same is like saying all Christians are the equivalent of Opus Dei, or all Jews are Hasidic.
 
It's more that the point of contention for two wars and a continuing insurgency is precisely that many of them would rather be an independent state. You could call ETA "Spanish Terrorists" or the SNP a "British Political Party", but it wouldn't be particularly helpful in understanding their motivation.
 
I'm not saying they are all the same but in the mind of someone willing to plant bombs in that way there's no telling what links or allegiences they feel I think.

In regard to motivation for the attacks, has there been official word as to why?

Or is it just a matter of Islam so therefore it must be that?
 
I think that's about the size of it. The guy in custody isn't speaking, well, can't speak because he tried to blow his own head off but failed, so there's not much to go on.
I think there's been vague talk of jihadi type views expressed by the older one that died.

Al Qaeda have a presence everywhere there is turmoil and a sizable Muslim population. I'm surprised there hasn't been more terrorists coming out of Chechnya. It's got an angry population with experience of violence and it is one of the few places in the world the US would never dare intervene.

You can't expect to carry out wars and drone strikes across the muslim world and expect every muslim to turn a blind eye. You're eventually going to push the 1 muslim in 10,000 with a capacity for violence into action.
 
Chechnya is not a Russian province. Chechnya is a Republic within the Russian Federation. I think a better analogy would be to Scotland, Wales or NI in Britain.



Not sure what your trying to say here, though the slang the Russian troops used is literally “Czechs”, as well as a few others like “cherniye” (blacks). They were not shortening the word “Chechen” to “Chech”.

I regret to say I couldn't get past the 3 minute mark. Its par for the course with fallout from atrocities though and this IS FOX.
 
The younger brother HAS been doing interviews with law enforcement, just giving written responses because he can't talk (the self-inflicted bullet wound went through his throat). According to him, the brothers were not members of an organization but held Muslim extremist beliefs and obtained the bomb-making plans from Inspire, an online magazine affiliated with al-Qaeda.

Public service announcement: if someone is "angry that the world pictures Islam as a violent religion," blowing innocent people up probably isn't going to improve the situation.
 
Even Stalin broke his teeth on chechnya. It has a violent, angry population, and our luck is that they turn their violence inwards towards Russia. There is a small population of chechens in the city nearby, and word is that you don't want to pick a fight with them.




No! You have to fight 'them' over there so that you don't have to fight 'them' at home! That's what the US recruiting agent said on tv.
