The most important sports figure of the past 50 years that you’ve never heard of died recently. Marvin Miller, the person who kickstarted free agency in all American sports, died at the age of 95. The sports world will forever be thankful.
“Marvin, without question, is largely responsible for ushering in the modern era of sports, which has resulted in tremendous benefits to players, owners and fans of all sports,” explained Michael Weiner, the head of the union of baseball players.
Players get millions of dollars nowadays. Owners see their franchises worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Leagues are now worth billions of dollars. And a lot of that is made possible by Marvin Miller.
After years of striking, baseball players finally won free agency in December of 1975. Since than, salaries have skyrocketed. The owners aren’t unhappy because they’ve seen fan interest rise exponentially as well.
