I'm in the market for a new car - my 01 Honda Civic was totaled a few weeks ago. Loved it for 8.5 years. Just test drove the new Civic, the Toyota Matrix, the Honda Fit and the Mazda3 hatchback. I'm torn between the reliability and fuel economy of the civic and/or the toyota vs. the great handling and feel of the Mazda - seems like a great value, but I'm not as familiar with the brand. I found the Fit to be cute but uncomfortable. The Civic was super comfy but a little boring-executive sedan-y 
The Toyota felt good, albeit a bit plastic. Loved the Mazda - felt like a much more expensive car.
I don't have a huge commute to work and school and I live in LA. I do drive cross-town once or twice a week. Hoping to buy not much over $20K. I'm a little worried about the cost of maintenance. Any advice as to how to make my decision?
