Mini dirt bike chain snapped?

So i brought a broken chinese mini dirt bike for £10, replaced the spark plug and stripped/ cleaned the engine and managed to get it going, however, after about a minute on half throttle the chain snapped. It looked in good condition before, but now the snapped link is quiet twisted and, obviously snapped and broken. I've order a whole new chain but would it be wrong to just put the new chain on, or should i be investigating it? Could wheel alignment have caused this etc...? What do chain tensions do and how do they work also, as i do not have any? I do not know much about motorcycles, only i used to have a 1/8th scale nitro car and my knowledge of that allowed me to fix the bike's engine.
