Mlb The Show 08 rookie timing?

Hi i am having a bit of trouble understand the hitting side of the game at the moment. Basically i'm playing on rookie and as i understand its just got to do with timing and you don't have to use the left analogue stick. What i don't understand is that i have my created player who is the best player in my team never seem to hit home runs with him. He gets plenty of hits but very few home runs yet his power stats are full. Is it just got to do with timing or is there another element. Is luck involved at all? Any advice would help Thanks
 
well first take the difficulty off of rookie and go up 1 difficulty. Then u can guess the pitch type. then most of the time guess a fastball in the lower left hand corner(IF HES A RIGHT HANDED BATTER) If left handed then guess the pitch in the lower right hand corner.
P.S. I did this and ended up hitting 33 home runs in my second season
