bjj, wrestling, submission grappling, muay thai are the favoured disciplines for mma and it's becoming common now. Would it be risky if i learn different disciplines aswell as these e.g krav maga, proper karate ( in china) ??.

there is nothing wrong with learning other styles but keep in mind you have to mold those styles to an mma style of match if you intend on competition.

Karate is pretty strict on rules for competition and few karate guys have been successful in the UFC or mma in general.

With the popularity of MMA, it has helped to narrow down at least what styles work best together in compliance with the rules.

paraphrase Joe Rogan here, MMA have advanced more the last 20 years then it has in the past 2000 years. We known what works and what doesn't.

You can try a different style and it can work, but don't be shocked if it doesn't work out perfectly. GSP uses judo skills, Machida uses a little karate.

MMA isn't missing anything. See, the proponents of Krag Maga, Karate, Wing Chun, whatever...they all claim to posses something called "t3h d34dly." An exaggerated belief in ones abilities, in that they believe the posses the secret ability to kill another person with their bare hands, in the form of eye gouges, neck chops, pressure points, you name it. The fact is they don't posses such abilities, because they have been tested time and time against Muay Thai fighters, Jujutsu Fighters, and MMA fighters. They were defeated horribly. And thus they use as an excuse NOT to compete in MMA, because they possess t3h d34dly. They don't compete because they don't want to kill anyone with their unique "powers."

So believe me friend, when I say, its been done before, search on youtube, wing chun against BJJ, whatever you want, you will see that what I have said here, is the truth.
