im 17 yr old male 6ft tall ...i am a boxer and started mma and bjj about 2 months ago, and took to it straight away. in the gym i train like ,arms and chest on monday. legs tuesday and back and shoulders of a friday.. personally i think that i should be doing full body circuit training instead, because currently i weigh 159 lbs im slightly muscley and to be honest i dont want to be really big muscley, just abit more ripped..
i will be fighting in the welterweight division, so i plan on gaining about 8 pounds of muscle..
would the circuit training be better for my fighting conditioning? and also will i be slower at gaining the 8 lbs muscle mass in the circuits compared to the body building style training?

thanks for your time

The way you fight has a lot to do with how you should train. If you pick people apart from afar or wrestle them down and eek out a decision victory, cardio is key, so you should probably do circuit training.

If you want to knock heads off, lift heavy 3/5's of your workout week, and devote the rest of the time to Cardio and Circuit.

THE EASIEST WAY TO ADD 8 POUNDS OF MUSCLE IS LIFTING HEAVY, SMALL REPS.

Gaining mass with circuit training is usually more difficult because the muscle does not tear itself without tremendous load, thus does not rebuild as often.

I would reccomend lifting heavy and balancing with at least 1 hard cardio day at the gym, and 1 hard cardio day during padwork/sparring.
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR FIGHT!

I would run, rump rope and do calisthenics and lose 4 lbs and fight at lightweight :)

Why compete at Welterweight division? You are only 159lbs and the Welterweight Division is 170lbs.. No matter if you pack on weight you will have a signifigant strength disadvantage. Fight at Light Weight(155lbs). You already have a signifigant reach advantage due to your height.

And to answer your question, lifting weights won't hinder your performance if you do it properly. Powerlift though.. Don't Bodybuild.. Powerlift.. This isn't a 'who looks better' competition.. This is a 'who can kick whos @$$' competition.

You can do different things. Circuits are good. But just regular lifting isn't going to beef you up too bad. You need to make sure you are doing cardio like everyday if you want to keep weight off. But here's the misconception about lifting weights. If you are going to get big its not just lifting. You have to EAT to get big. If you are on a diet set up to cut fat, cut carbs and you are watching your portions, you will not get big.
