monte carlo engine help?

alright so i want a project car specifically a 84-87 monte carlo and i have found one for sale for around 600 dollars because the engine is blown (so they think) they said it just smokes really bad. my real question is how much on average would it cost to put a decent engine in it? as in have someone take out the motor and put a different one in? or would it be better to just save up and buy like a nice crate motor? and couldnt the engine not be blown?
 
I think that car came with a 305 which is a total pig. Good news is that most GM engines will fit

if you can find a nice 350 that will do nicely
