OK, so as I understand it, Mormons believe that St. John never died, in fact he's still alive to this very day *somewhere*. Mormons also believe that the early Christian Church apostatized completely without a single priesthood holder left to continue the ministry.

My question: Why was an apostasy necessary if John has been alive all this time? Why didn't he go an "correct" the apostatized church? Why didn't he continue ordaining people to the priesthood? As I understand it, he was given the gift of deathlessness IN ORDER to preach the gospel, in fact he was one of the alleged priesthood holders who ordained Joseph Smith who allegedly restored this early Christian Church. Why did he have to wait almost 1800 years to do this?

Mormons, this doesn't make any sense.
