saw on the news today that morning after pills have been approved for over the counter sales. the emergency contraception pills are a much needed alternative to abortion in the eyes of most. there is an age restriction of 18.
studies intend to be launched on its use to decide weather or not the age limit is even needed.but the religious right are ALREADY bitching about it. “Let there be no mistake about it, today’s decision lies at the feet of President Bush and has created a lasting rift with the Catholic faithful who compromise a large part of his support base,” said the Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, an anti-abortion group based in Virginia

but in any case the decision has been made, the pills legalized for sale and being put into practice hopefully by the end of the year. Its a good victory and its nice to see the needs of the people prevail over the idiotic religious politics.

EDIT: i forgot to add the link!!! http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/24/health/24cnd-pill.html?ref=us

The age limit is ridicules. As a student of economics I can say with confidence that not being able to by a morning after pill is IN NO WAY A DETERANT to the under 18s.

A strange law in the UK is that you halfto have a counseling session before you can get a contraceptive implant

I for one feel safer knowing that Tekkengod and his ever watchful eye are keeping an eye out for the rest of us.

why the hell did i put this in the religion forum? this should be in off topic!

But you can get the morning-after pill for free from any doctor's surgery, health clinic or walk-in centre.

In many ways the NHS is very good in terms of contraception (free condoms, contraceptive pill, emergency contraception etc)

And a permanent cure for nothing else? HPV? Syphillis?

Don't get me wrong I'm all for this bill.. thats the way it needs to be.. you can't preach 'womans choice' when your laws take away her options to choose from... but I get the strange feeling with this bill, there's going to be alot more idiots screwing without regard to vastly more health damaging consequences...

The two are very different things. Emergency contraception is intended for emergency situations, such as post-rape or if a condom breaks, etc. It is not an alternative to abortion.

Emergency contraception is intended to prevent unwanted pregnancy before it occurs. Abortion is intended to remove unwanted pregnancy after it occurs. They have very different purposes.

I think the huge majority of us are in no position to tell another adult how to treat their own body. If it puts us at risk, (like alcohol) then there should be some regulation. But a morning after pill? Anyone who disagrees with that should sign up to adopt one of the unwanted babies that'll be born.

I agree. I may not support other peoples' choices somtimes, but I always support their right to make them.

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -Voltaire

Kinda what I was gettin at, making unprotected sex easier is not a good idea, I agree that in an emergancy these are a good idea, but too many people will find this an alternative to safe sex

Hopefully it can be controlled who is buying it over the counter, just as there is when it is prescribed by a doctor.

Didn't know about the contraceptive implant thing, I was offered one but declined.

Kwajman, I totally agree with you, anyone who disagrees with the morning after pill should be willing to adopt. It's a good thing there are many, many couples who are willing to take on a baby.

yeah, thats the stance people need to take, if you're against the medicine, be ready to shoulder some effects of it not being put into practice.

There is an age restriction on the morning after pill of 18 in the UK and America?!!?!?!

Here in Australia its 16 (might even be lower).

If it werent for the magical power of the morning after pill, I'd be the proud father of several hundred kids .

I can state for a fact that under 18s can get the morning after pill in England, I suspect the age limit is 16 here.

Ok will try not to rant but Emergancy Hormonal Contaception (EHC) works for up to a week after, the morning after pill is a misnoma.
In the UK, last time I checked, it is available over the counter from pharmacies for 16 years and older everywhere (within 72hrs I think). In some areas it is also available without perscription to under 16's (under patient group directives) with various conditions attached, some PGD also make it free to anyone.

In both cases the Phamacist dispensing needs to speak to the person to take the medicine personally, thougth someone else can collect it. Can't remember all the details off the top of my head but there are various criteria that must be for filled.
