I'm a big fan of V twins and the SV is meant to be a lovely bike, very good for newer riders but also capable enough to keep you interested for a long time afterwards.
Not everyone likes V's though, so try riding one before you buy. Otherwise you could think of something like the older Yamaha R6 models, or perhaps the yamaha 6 before the R6. It was called the Thundercat in the UK and is a litlle bigger and roomier so might suit you better.
Otherwise what these guys have said; ride slow and build over time. Sports bikes esecially are so capable these days tat it's easy to confuse what it's doing for you with your talent (as the medic at Snetterton circuit said to me, "You were halfway round the bend and you ran out of talent."), so always ride with something in reserve and think about some advanced rider training sooner rather than later.
