After recently having a failure of a single large file (Truecrypt file container) I have now realized that I sort of need to do a better job of backing things up. My plan is to buy a case of DVD rewrittables, and then take the Truecrypt file container (25 gigs in size) and split it up into 6 .rar files to burn onto 6 DVD's. That way, in the event of something unfortunate and my original file was damaged or lost, I could fall back onto the DVD's for a restore point. How would this work? Would winrar just ask me for the next volume for the file, and then I just insert the next DVD; or would it not work at all? I would buy a hard drive to back it up, but I don't quite feel like spending the money. DVD's are just a better option for me right now.

While combining the files Winrar will ask for the next part, it will ask for location of the file. You can insert the DVDs one by one. It wont stop get corrupted.

Just burn all 6 rar files to DVD and ounce their on there just pop the DVD in the DVD drive and open the files that are on the disk and drag and drop files to desktop. Ounce their on you desktop extract them and your done. =D (Done this but used this program to burn the rar files on to the disk):
