My 1995 Mercury sable recently started doing this?

Two days ago, my very quiet and usually well working mercury sable started having an acceleration problem. ill hit the gas, right after a dead stop, and it takes it a few seconds to respond but when it does respond, it runs pretty normal other than its reving about 1/2 an RPM higher than it usually does in every aspect. On the highway at 65 it use to rev 2.5 rpms, now its 3. What's the deal?
