My 1998 chevy 4-door blazer won't start. The only error code is the MAF Sensor.?

I can remove the air filter hose and pour some gas or spray carb cleaner in the fuel injection and the car will start and run for a few seconds and then die. I have checked the fuel line, the fuel pump, and fuel filter and all are fine. I opened the fuel line cap under the hood and checked the fuel pressure and it checks within the requirements (around 45 psi). This would indicate that the fuel to the engine is good under normal circumstances. I did not know that the MAF sensor would simply cause the engine to 'not run', but instead maybe run ragged, so this is news to me. My question is, instead of spending the 100 dollars on a new MAF sensor, is there a way to clean it? I'd hate to spend the money only to find out that this isn't the problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could check it myself and/or bypass it? I've read up a tiny bit to see if it could operate without the MAF and I know it can't. I'm thinking there's got to be a way to 'trick' the computer into thinking that it is receiving the voltage information... any information would be greatly appreciated.
